Frequently Asked Questions

What's the benefit of Soy Fed Chicken
We choose a soy-free ration for a few reasons:
- Customer preference: Many folks want to avoid soy in their diet, and this ensures they can enjoy our chicken with confidence.
- Healthier nutrition: Studies show soy-free rations improve the omega-3 to omega-6 ratio in the meat—better for heart and overall health.
- Farm values: It fits with our mission of raising birds as naturally and healthfully as possible.
Our birds still get all the protein and nutrients they need—just without soy.
What does “pasture-raised” mean?
Our chickens live outdoors on fresh pasture, moved daily in mobile coops (chicken tractors). They enjoy sunshine, bugs, and grass in addition to their feed.
How are your chickens different from store-bought chicken?
Stubbs Farm chickens are raised in small batches, without cramped barns or chemical-laced feed. Pastured poultry has more flavor, higher vitamin D and omega-3s, and is raised with care.
What breed of chickens do you raise?
We raise Cornish Cross broilers, the most common meat bird in the U.S. They’re bred to grow quickly and produce tender, meaty cuts (think plump chicken breasts and hearty thighs).
Some people wonder if fast-growing breeds are “unnatural.” The truth is, they’re just selectively bred—not genetically modified. It’s the same way certain dog breeds grow faster or larger than others.
We like Cornish Cross because:
- They’re reliable and efficient, ready in just 6–8 weeks.
- They produce a consistent, tender meat most families enjoy.
- Starting with this breed helps us get Stubbs Farm off the ground while we experiment with other heritage options in the future.
What do you feed your chickens?
Our chickens are fed a soy-free, fully organic, and non-GMO ration sourced from Free Wing Farms. It’s a high-quality feed that ensures they get all the protein, vitamins, and minerals they need—without the fillers or questionable ingredients you find in conventional chicken feed.
On top of that, our birds are moved daily on pasture, where they forage for grass, seeds, and bugs. That combination of premium feed + natural foraging is what makes Stubbs Farm chicken different: healthier, tastier, and more nutrient-dense.
Feed is the single biggest cost of raising chickens (about 70–75%), but we believe investing in the best is worth it—for the chickens, the soil, and your table.
Do you use antibiotics or hormones?
Nope. No antibiotics, no growth hormones, no vaccines, no funny business. Just healthy birds raised the natural way.
How do I place an order?
Easy—use our online order form. We raise chickens in batches, so pre-ordering is the best way to make sure you don’t miss out.
How do pickups work?
On processing day, chickens are cooled in ice and ready for same-day pickup at the farm (or a designated location). Additionally, pickups are available for a couple of days after processing if you can't make it on the day itself. Details are sent before each batch.
Do you deliver?
Right now, all orders are pickup only. We may add local delivery in the future if there’s enough interest.
How big are the chickens?
Processed birds usually range from 4–6 lbs each, depending on the batch.
Can I visit the farm or watch processing day?
Yes! We welcome visitors (with notice) and even offer a free chicken if you volunteer to help on processing day.
Do you raise anything besides chicken?
For now, chickens are the main event—but we’re exploring pastured pork for the future (and we’d love your feedback).
Is Stubbs Farm veteran-owned?
Yes—our farm is family-run and veteran-owned. Supporting us helps support local agriculture and veteran entrepreneurship.
